August 8, 2008 - "What can we learn from the Brett Favre debacle?"

I think what happened to Brett Favre, quarterback of the Green Bay Packers, is tragic.  I'll outline the story below, but a man who has given the Green Bay Packers this much, illustrates the brutality of Corporate America.  I know this isn't an investing story but I thought it was interesting.

Brett Favre will be in the Hall of Fame the first year he is eligible.  He has set every major record a quarterback can set:

  • Brett never missed a game for the Packers, showing up to work EVERY singly day. He started 253 consecutive games (275 including playoffs).
  •  He will be in the Hall of Fame the first year he is eligible because he set every major record a quarterback can set including most touchdown passes (442), completions (5,337), attempts (8,758), yards (61,655), and most importantly, wins as a starting Quarterback (160).
  • He is a 3 time Associated Press MVP from 1995-1997.
  • He has gone to the Super Bowl twice and won once.
  • ESPN reported, the Packers won a league worst 40% of their games in the years before Brett Favre. After Brett Favre arrived in 1992, the Packers have won over 60% of their games, which is a league's best from 1992-2008.
  • Brett Favre lost in overtime to go to the Super Bowl in 2007.

This man has done everything for the Green Bay Packers.  This is not a debate of Brett Favre vs. current starter Aaron Rodgers.  After literally taking the franchise from the trash of the NFL to one of the premier teams, he has deserved the right to play one more season.  However, the Packers made it clear that he is no longer needed, and literally threw him out of the organization.  It's a brutal world out there, and if it can happen to one of the best in the industry, Brett Favre, it can happen to you one day too.  It doesn't matter how good you are...
